Beekeepers who put colonies on specialized hive pallets often use migratory lids. These types of lids have extensions at the front and back that prevent them from moving around, while also getting rid of any space between hives that would typically result from using a regular telescoping lid. By opting for migratory lids, beekeepers can forego using inner covers made of wood.

What are the advantages of a migratory lid?

A migratory lid offers a number of advantages over a telescoping cover. It is cheaper to build and much easier to construct, making it perfect for those with limited carpentry skills or budgets. Furthermore, an inner cover is no longer needed since the bees won’t be able to use propolis as a glue with this kind of surface construction, offering more storage space while saving you from having another item that needs tracking.
