Rogers Lantic Refined Sugar in 20 kg. This is a great buy for feeding your bees sugar syrup. It is now August and depending on your location the dearth is upon us. We want to make strong hives going into the winter.

Rogers Lantic Refined Sugar is a proudly Canadian product with roots from coast to coast in Montreal, Toronto 7 Vancouver. In 1888 the first sugar refinery was built in Montreal on the St Lawrence River. In 1890 he built a refinery in Vancouver when he realized the cost of transport was high. In 1912 the Atlantic refinery was built in St John, New Brunswick. In 1930 he became involved in the sugar beet industry and made another in Alberta.

Why feed bees sugar water? Of course the best food for bees is nectar from plants but when plants are scare we have to make sure they have enough resources to survive the winter. Although not the same as nectar it does help colonies survive. Always use white sugar never use molasses or brown sugar the end result will be sick or dead bees. Along with sugar water you can add a supplement such as “Honey B Healthy” or “Hive Alive”. This encourages the bees to eat and helps their digestive system. It also prevents sugar syrup frpm becoming moldy.

How to make 1 Gallon of sugar water? Mix equal parts of warm water and sugar 1:1 sugar syrup. See the recipe below:

10 /2/3 cup of granulated sugar
1- 2/2 cup of warm water

2:1 sugar water:

use twice as much sugar as water such as 8 cups sugar and 4 cups warm water.

Use 1:1 sugar syrup for spring buildup as it is close to what nectar is to the bees and helps encourage the bees to build out comb and raise brood. In the fall the 2:1 sugar syrup is to promote food storage. It is not likely to encourage brood rearing. This will not be real honey but the bees will store it as such. Feeding them is much better then having them starve and die in the winter. Fall feeding should be completed before cold weather arrives.

Some other reasons to feed your bees are:

**New colony just starting out as they need extra resources to build out comb
**Hives low on food stores after the winter
**Draught-weeks with no rain causes a lack of food for the bees

Common feeders to use for feeding honey bees are:

**Ceracell Top Feeders
**frame feeders
**feeder pails
**boardman feeders
**bottle feeders

Bottle feeders and boardman feeders are very easy to use and you can clearly see when the bottle becomes low. However, bees can drain these feeders within a few hours sometimes and unless you can visit the hive frequently may not be your best option. Food hanging around the front of the hive can also encourage robbing which you don’t want. If you want to use a boardman feeder it is best to place irt inside an empty box with hive lid on top.

Ceracell Top feeders are the number 1 seller for feeding bees. You place it right under the top cover and holds 1-2 gallons of syrup and can feed the colony for several days. Easy to fill without disturbing bees and hold a lot of food. Overtime the feeder can leak so watch out for that. Make sure your top lid is on tight or it will cause a feeding frenzy.

Another popular option is frame feeders it takes the place of one frame in the hive so you will have 9 frames plus one frame feeder. They can hold 1 gallon of syrup. This is a good option in cooler weather but you do have to open the hive to place it in the hive body. Watch out for leaking over time and the bees may frown into the feeder to reduce this place small sticks in there.

Pail feeders is a popular way to feed the bees. A plastic pail with mesh feeder holes contains 1 gallon of sugar syrup. Fill with sugar syrup place lid on tightly. When you turn it upside down on your inner cover some feed may escape until a seal forms. Again place in an empty hive body and cover with top cover this will prevent it getting moved by a windstorm.
