Our bee boxes are designed to emulate a Langstroth Hive, and feature an outer/telescoping cover to protect the hive from rain, an inner cover for insulation and bee escapes, shallow/honey supers for honey production, a queen excluder for worker bee passage, and frames to hold honeycomb, bees, pollen, and nectar. This type of setup is not ideal for top bar beekeeping, with a few additional challenges. For example, honey must be removed from the natural comb, leaving the comb behind to be replaced each year. Also, these hives require more frequent inspections to ensure the bees don’t overcrowd or swarm.

3. Warre Hive

Beekeepers looking for a reliable, easy-to-manage hive should consider Warré (war-RAY) boxes. This mid-20th century design offers a vertical top bar hive with identically sized stacked boxes, eliminating the need for frames or foundation sheets. Bees build their honeycomb down from top bars placed within each box, providing an ideal home for your hive.

Bee boxes are designed according to the Warré style, allowing beekeepers to easily “bottom-super” their hive. This emulates the natural environment of bees, creating the ideal environment for a healthy and happy bee colony. Exact assembly is important, so follow the plan directions carefully to ensure the best results.
