Honey Super

A commercial or hobbyist managed beehive usually contains a honey super, such as the popular “pine box” or “medium” super with a depth of 6 5⁄8 inches, designed to collect honey. This super is typically found in the length and width dimensions of a Langstroth hive.
The honey super is made up of a container holding 8-10 frames, where Western honeybees gather nectar and convert it into honeycomb on the frames. Once the honeycomb is full, the bees will decrease the moisture level to 17-18% before sealing it with beeswax.

During an abundant nectar source and rapid nectar collection, known as a honey flow, beekeepers will add multiple honey supers to their hives to provide adequate storage space. These supers are removed in the fall for honey extraction and winterization, yet enough honey is retained for the bees’ winter consumption.

It should be noted here that some beekeepers will use either a medium box or a deep box as a honey super. The deep box when filled with honey can be 80-100 lbs so if you decide to do that make sure you can lift 80-100 lbs. A medium box filled with honey will be 40-60 lbs.

What are the dimensions of a Langstroth hive?

Using 34 inch wood the outside dimensions are 19 78” × 16 14” × height. In the metric system 25mm wood may be used which makes the outside dimensions 515mm × 425mm × height.
