OPH Canacell Medium Frame

In a Langstroth-style beehive, there are hanging bee frames where bees build honeycomb. These frames can be left empty (known as foundationless) or fitted with foundation or wire, typically made of plastic or wax and featuring a hexagonal imprint. The standard Langstroth hive fits 10 frames, but a smaller 8 frame box is available for those who prefer to work with lighter equipment. For more information on the advantages and disadvantages of different hive bodies, check out our blog post.

Frames are typically composed of either wood or plastic. In my experience, wood frames are preferable due to their durability. While they do require assembly, they have a longer lifespan compared to plastic frames. Additionally, using frame savers can easily fix any minor damages. On the other hand, plastic frames come with pre-built foundations, but I have noticed that they tend to crack in a few years. Unfortunately, this means that the entire frame needs to be thrown away once the comb is no longer usable, as the foundation cannot be reused.

OPH Beekeeping Wooden frames are made in Canada from Canadian pine. We use special wood glue and staples that are 1 3/4 inches long to make the frames super sturdy. We also have black plastic frames as well.
