How many hives should I start with?

How many beehives should I start with?

It is a good practice to start off with at least two beehives. This will ensure there is enough honey for harvesting and that your hives can work together,  if one encounters difficulties.

Having multiple colonies also means it’s e.asier to identify any sicknesses or pests as it would occur in only one hive rather than both, making it easier to isolate the problem.

Starting with two or three hives allows you to spread out resources while entering the world of beekeeping with less risk than starting with four or more colonies straight away.

How do I learn how to do beekeeping?

The best way to learn about beekeeping is by reading books, attending workshops or courses, joining a local beekeeping club, watching videos and talking to experienced beekeepers. This will help you obtain basic information as well as specific advice from those who have been in the field for many years.

Additionally, there are resources available on the internet which can provide more information about bees and how to look after them. Try our comprehensive Beekeeper Training its a full day and will give you the knowledge you need to become an effective beekeeper.

When is a good time to buy my bees?

The best time to obtain your bees is in late winter or early spring; this when the first section of new queens are available. You can buy a complete colony with frames, or just some boxes and frames without any bees. Purchasing from a licensed beekeeper ensures that your hive will start out healthy and pest-free. Additionally, your bee supplier might provide advice on any issues you may have during installation of the hive and throughout the season.
