Beekeeper Collecting Honey

Extracting honey from frame
extracting honey from frame

Beekeepers Collect Honey by scraping off the comb caps and placing the frames in a honey extractor to collect the honey for processing. An extractor is a centrifuge that spins the frames which forces the honey out of the frames.

There are several ways to get the bees off the frames to get ready for extracting:

1. Bee brush-you can gentle brush the bees off the frame and place the frame in a box and cover it to take it home for processing but
the bees do not enjoy being brushed off so make sure you are wearing your suit.
2. Quebec Bee Escape-place this board on the hive the bees go back down into the hive but they cant figure out how to come back up due
to its unique design. Just place it on the hive a few days before you plan to take your honey frames.
3. Fume board-using a scent that the bees don’t like causes the bees to stay down in the hive.

Once you have the bees taken care off tools that you will need to remove caps are:

1. Uncapping Fork
2. Uncapping Roller
3. Electric Honey Planer
4.Eletric Uncapping Knife

Options for extractors:

1. Manual extractors-perfect for a few hives requires a bit of manual labor
2. Electric Extractors- here you have options from 4 frame-24 frame some of them remove honey from the frames radially which means it
takes honey from both sides of the frame at same time saving you time and money. Some of the extractors you will have to flip the
frames to remove the honey from the other side of the frame.

There are many options for a beekeeper to collect honey you have to find what works with your apiary. Look at things like size of your apiary. Do you plan to grow? It may help you in choosing the type of equipment that you need.
